Hangzhou: A Field Guide to Power, Belief and Beauty
Four routes through five thousand years.
HANGZHOU- Today, that name conjures Alibaba, the digital economy, and the glow of a new era.
But for most of its two-thousand-year history, it was a different kind of powerhouse.
The southern terminus of the Grand Canal — over 1,700 kilometres, the first of its kind in human history — where grain, silk, and ideas moved to feed empires.

It was the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1127–1279) — a sanctuary city built under military pressure, far from the north it had lost.
Here, landscape painters invented a new way of seeing nature. Scholar-officials argued that a well-designed garden was a moral statement.

Long before e-commerce, Hangzhou already knew how to connect things—people, goods, aesthetics, and beliefs.
It is organized around geographic and cultural anchors — mountain valleys, hidden courtyards, ancient canal districts — each one a different frequency on which Hangzhou transmits.

How To Read Hangzhou
Hangzhou rewards a particular kind of attention. The sights are abundant — almost overwhelming — but moving between them without a framework is like reading isolated sentences from a book you haven't been introduced to.
This city has an internal logic. A deep historical frequency that has organised how it builds, thinks, and absorbs change across five millennia.
This guide is built around four main narratives, each tracing a different layer of the city's identity.
Once Hangzhou's underlying logic is legible, the itinerary changes with it—what looked like sightseeing becomes a way of understanding the city sitting quietly behind it. Move around the city with this new lens, and let it shift how you see what you are looking at.
Each chapter below is a different way into the same city.
Start wherever pulls you first.
