Beyond the Postcard. Beneath the Surface.

About
Mandarin Unpeeled is an independent travel intelligence publication dedicated to making today's China legible.
Most travel coverage of China misses the mark. It is either flattened by geopolitical bias, reduced to itineraries in tourist hotspots, or wrapped in generic hotel and restaurant recommendations. It tells you what to look at — but leaves out what truly makes a place matter.
We give you the framework that connects the dots.
Through careful curation and dissection of culture, history, commerce, and society, we make China readable on screen and on the ground — for the independent-minded, the professionally motivated, and the genuinely curious who want China intelligence that mainstream travel media cannot provide.

Why We Exist
This publication began as a deeply personal research project.
Having spent my early life in China and the rest across two other continents, I had watched outside coverage of my home country be consistently misrepresented, stopping short of where the real understanding begins.
I wanted to understand China from its roots, and make sense of it in the broader context of the world today.
What started as a private investigation into the hyper-local, the historically layered, and the culturally specific eventually became this — a publication built on the belief that China demands a different way of thinking and seeing, one that most travel media has never quite managed to offer.
Years of research, on-the-ground scouting, and a career spanning journalism, publishing, and cross-border business culminated in Mandarin Unpeeled.
Built to bridge that gap.
